Tribal knowledge and biodiversity as a drivers of conservation of sacred grove: A study at Edavaka Panchayath, Wayanad
Abstract : Sacred groves are biological heritage, conserved largely as a cultural and religious tradition of dedicating patches of forests to various deities. These are scattered all over Western Ghats. Many of these groves are mainly under the ownership of temple trusts. These groves generally represent climax vegetation and their species diversity is evidently greater than the surrounding forest areas. This study on Biodiversity in a Sacred Grove will be the new inventory which is very essential to know about the status of biodiversity as a whole. To understand the traditional knowledge and future implication in conserving the biodiversity. Identification of stakeholders of sacred groves can give details about any difference in conservational and traditional knowledge about conservation of Biodiversity. The current studies emphases the role of tribal people's knowledge to conserve biodiversity of sacred grove in the Edavaka Panchayat.
