Research on the olive pest, Resseliella oleisuga (Targioni-Tozzetti, 1887) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Cyprus
Abstract : Resseliella oleisuga (Targioni-Tozzetti, 1887) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), known as the olive bark midge, is commonly found in Mediterranean countries. However, this study reports the first record of this species in Cyprus. Our studies were also carried out on grafted olive saplings grown in the greenhouse at the Güzelyurt Research Station in Northern Cyprus and on olive trees grown in its surroundings in order to determine some bio-ecological characteristics, damage status and control time of R. oleisuga. To determine and monitor the emergence time of adult Olive tree bark flies, 8-12 infested seedlings were cultured in plastic containers in the greenhouse and laboratory. As a result of the studies, it was determined that approximately 60% of the grafted seedlings in the greenhouse were infested, and that adult flies emerged in the laboratory and greenhouse in the 3rd week of February, and it was concluded that the appropriate time for control would be a few days after emergence. In olive trees growing in the surrounding area, it was observed that the damage rate was lower in infected plants.
