New distribution records of Chrysilla volupe (Karsch, 1879) (Araneae: Salticidae) from West Bengal, India with notes on its behaviour and ecology
Abstract : This article presents the first comprehensive scientific report on the rare jumping spider, Chrysilla volupe (Karsch, 1879) (Araneae: Salticidae) from West Bengal. Adult males of the species were recorded in two distinct ecoregions of Alipurduar and South-24 Parganas districts of the state on May 26, 2017 and Aug 19, 2018 respectively. The species seem to prefer cool and humid environments, particularly near freshwater sources under different ecosystem situations. Observed males were restless and fast-moving, and distinctively elevating their abdomen and exposing their spinnerets when wary. As their habitats are variously modified, proper management practices should safeguard these microfaunal assets under existing and future in-situ conservation practices.
