Nesting behaviour and habitat observations of the black-naped monarch in Banaskantha, Gujarat
Abstract : The Black-naped Monarch, is a slim and beautiful bird, widely found in the forest area of different parts of Asia including India. Males of these birds are more attractive when they have a black mark on their head, showing a clear sexual dimorphism. The present work is aimed to study the habitat and nesting activity of Black-naped Monarch, on random spots of two protected areas wise Jessore Wildlife Sanctuary and Balaram-Ambaji Wildlife Sanctuary. Observations were carried out during rainy season of 2019 to 2024. A total of 8 nests were observed during our study. Birds built their nests on lowland to hilly forest and chosen the plants close to streams. Our observation revealed that these birds made small cup shaped nest. The female usually lays 3-4 egg and both male and female alternately incubate the eggs till they hatch. Both the parents take part in feeding and other parental cares.
