Morphology of external genitalia of adult Deudorix isocrates (Fab.) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)
Abstract : The present work on morphology of external genitalia of D. isocrates is the first detailed report of this aspect of studies on this pest species. The male genitalia are contributed by modified 9th and 10th segments while female genitalia are by 8th ,9th and 10th abdominal segments. In male genitalia, the 9th segment is modified to form dorsal tegumen, ventrolateral vinculum and anteriorly projected ventral plat of saccus. The tegumen expands laterally while vinculum appears narrow slit. Posterior to tegumen the 10th segment produced in to scaphium which laterally produced into socii. Ventral to socii, there are ‘U’ shaped transversely located brachia. Each brachium is fused with diaphragma at middle portion while distal free portion ends with sharply pointed tip. Ventral part of genitalia is produced into sclerites; valvae which lie lateral to aedeagus and acts as clasping organs. The valva shows ventral part; sacculus and dorsal; costa while the posterior tapering part of valva is contributed by ampulla and harp. Aedeagus bears proximal highly sclerotized phallobase and lengthwise poorly sclerotized portion ends with highly folded distal membranous bulge. The aedeagus traverses diaphragma through anellus. The female genitalia bear two openings; one is ostium bursae which is located posterior to edge of 7th segment the second; ovipositor which is located between papillae anales. Female genitalia are supported with two pairs of apophyses; the apophyses anteriores; produced from 8th tergum and the apophyses posteriors; arise from 9+10segment. The papillae anales are sclerotized, broad plates posteriorly ends with smooth curvature. The papillae anales bear densely distributed socketed and nonsocketed hairs as well as sensilla.
