Insect pest spectrum of Brinjal, Solanum melongena (L.) and effect of neem leaf extract (Azadirachtin) for their management
Abstract :The study was aimed to evaluate the insecticidal and repellent efficacy of neem leaf extract for the management of white fly Bemesia tabaci (Gennadius), Aphid Aphis gossypii (Kalt) and Thrips Thrips palmi (Karny) infesting Brinjal Solanum melongena. Bioassays were performed during 2017-18, in concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75% at times interval of 15/30 days respectively, Reduction in the numbers of insect pests were assessed with three concentrations (25, 50, and 75%) at 24, 48 and 72 hours. Neem extracts have both insecticide and repellent properties. Neem extract results in this study confirmed the reduction of the population densities of whitefly, aphids and thrips on brinjal plant. 75% neem leaf extract concentrations appeared to be highly effective and their effects remained highest up to 15 days after that gradually decreased. The study also concluded that for successful control of whiteflies and aphids with at least two sprays of neem leaf extract should be carried out in a month. It is further suggested that use of neem extract along with other plants extracts must be applied as IPM tools to replace synthetic insecticides for the betterment of natural enemies and the surroundings.
