Foraging behavior and floral host selection of Apis cerana indica and Tetragonula iridipennis

Abstract : Honey bees are indispensable pollinators in both natural and agricultural systems. This research focuses on the foraging patterns and floral preferences of two native bee species in Kerala: Apis cerana indica and Tetragonula iridipennis. The study, conducted at Thekkady during the months of August to December, documented foraging attraction, activity rhythms, and floral host choices. Apis cerana indica displayed strong affinity for pumpkin flowers, while Tetragonula iridipennis predominantly visited chilli flowers. Observations revealed significant morning activity peaks in both species, aligning with anthesis and optimal environmental conditions. The findings confirm the influence of floral traits, resource availability, and bee-specific adaptations in guiding foraging behavior. This research contributes to sustainable pollination practices by highlighting the compatibility between native bee behavior and local crop ecology.
