Epizootiological and epidemiological importance of zoonotic helminths in domestic carnivores and small ruminants of Azerbaijan
Abstract : The conducted studies identified 28 zoonotic helminth species in carnivorous animals (3 trematode species, 12 cestode species, 1 acanthocephalan species, and 12 nematode species) and 5 zoonotic helminth species in small ruminants. Infection with zoonotic helminths causes significant economic losses in livestock farms, as the productivity of infected domestic animals declines across all parameters. The prevalence of zoonotic helminth infections in domestic animals is very high, often reaching 40–45%. Human health is also seriously affected; for example, mortality during surgical intervention in patients infected with echinococcosis can reach 30%. Therefore, the development and implementation of appropriate prophylactic and control measures against zoonotic helminths of epizootiological and epidemiological importance is highly warranted.
