Alien attack in India: House sparrows (Passer domesticus) are under threat by invasive alien species Fishhook cactus

Abstract : Worldwide, the number of new invasive alien species (IAS) recordings has steadily increased. Today, biological invasions are considered among the main drivers causing biodiversity loss and species extinctions in the major plant and animal taxa across the world. The cactus family (Cactaceae), is one of the most popular horticultural plant groups, a few of them are among the most damaging invasive plant species in the world. In this article, we will discuss how an invasive alien plant species fishhook cactus may be causing the extinction of native house sparrow birds of India. The house sparrow has witnessed a significant decrease in population. Currently, it's listed in the Red Data Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources which draws high conservation concern.
